ROH Takes A Look At Global Wars By The Numbers

Ring Of Honor has their Global Wars shows coming up this week beginning today and ending on Sunday, and they took a look at their ‘friendly competition’ with New Japan Pro-Wrestling by the numbers. The following is from ROHWrestling.com:

ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling embark on a five-day, four-event tour beginning Wednesday November 7 in Lewiston, ME concluding on November 11 in Toronto, ON! The event marks the fifth year that ROH and NJPW have partnered to bring their best to face one another in international competition!

All four events will be broadcast LIVE, free for all HonorClub members! As 2018 winds to close, let’s take a look at where things stand heading into this year’s Global Wars Tour!

ROH TAKES THE LEAD IN 2018

In matches contested where there are participants that clearly represent solely ROH or NJPW at the time of competition and matches are contested under the ROH banner, New Japan held a narrow one-win advantage heading into 2018! With a record of 53-54-1, ROH stars fought back at Honor Rising and then War of the Worlds and Honor United!

Through 2018, ROH has picked up key victories against NJPW stars in 2018, tilting the advantage to the favor of ROH to 67-65-1!

NINE HEAD-TO-HEAD MATCH-UPS AT GLOBAL WARS

This year’s Global Wars tour features eight head-to-head match-ups between ROH and NJPW singles and tag team stars. NJPW may be in the driver’s seat with everything to gain! Many of the match-ups, on paper, seemingly seem to favor NJPW stars but the match-up to watch is former ROH World Champion Cody defending the IWGP United States Championship against Beretta!

But there are also tag team dream matches like EVIL and SANADA of Los Ingobernables de Japon taking on Bully Ray and Silas Young in Lowell and then the Briscoes in Toronto!

ROH SHINES WITH GOLD ON THE LINE

With either a Ring of Honor or New Japan championship on the line, Ring of Honor has a decisive advantage in championship matches. With an impressive 21-7 record, Ring of Honor stars step up big when the stakes are the highest.

In matches where championships have crossed organizational boundaries, New Japan is 2-1! Tomohiro Ishii defeating Roderick Strong for the title in Japan at Honor Rising 2016, Bobby Fish defeating Ishii for the title at Global Wars 2016, and KUSHIDA defeating Marty Scurll during the 2017 War of the Worlds international television taping in Philadelphia this past May!

While Kenny King defeated KUSHIDA to win the ROH World Television Championship at Death Before Dishonor 2017, these events were not counted as they were not presented under the head-to-head banner.

TWO FINAL DAY MATCH UPS COULD DECIDE THE RECORD BOOKS FOR 2018

On the fourth and final day, Global Wars – Toronto features two head-to-head match-ups of NJPW and ROH stars! In a dream tag team match, former nine-time ROH World Tag Team Champions and IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions The Briscoes take on former IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions EVIL and SANADA and the aforementioned IWGP United States Championship bout between Cody and Beretta! It is very likely that whoever wins these bouts will decide who closes 2018 with the edge in this long-running promotional rivalry that only continues to heat up on the road to G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden!

Note: events used to calculate wins and losses included all War of the Worlds, Global Wars, Field of Honor, Honor Rising, and Honor United branded events that were co-promoted by ROH and NJPW. Events that were not presented under the co-branding of both organizations were not counted nor were matches that included ROH and NJPW stars teaming with one another.
