WWE 2K19: MyPlayer, Towers, and 2K Showcase
One major focal point this year was the MyPlayer Mode. This is the mode type that features a very specific created superstar that you created specifically for this mode and is separate from the entire game. I really enjoyed creating my own player, a version of the character I’ve been creating for at least 20 years now, and leveling him up through the brand new skill tree.
If you’re familiar with role-playing games, you should be familiar with the concept of a skill tree but for those that aren’t, skill trees work on a certain number of points and you’re allowed to assign those points in different ways to level up your character and how you choose to level him up will determine his very own qualities such as speed, power, and stamina.
Another cool part of the MyPlayer is the MyCareer. I’m going to be real here, this alone is the reason to pick up this game. It’s a brand new campaign-style one player mode featuring voiceovers and a very deep storyline. You take your rookie from the Independent scene to the WWE—but that doesn’t come without its twists and turns—you have quite a few decisions that can determine what kind of cutscene you will see. WWE games have varied from this formula for the last few years and I’m so happy to see it not only return, but see it do a wonderful job of creating a storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Another new addition to single-player gameplay is Towers Mode. This is a gauntlet style Mode where you can take on many different challenges based on a specific theme. This is the home of the AJ Styles Million Dollar Challenge and while I haven’t gone too far in the challenge yet, I love the difficulty of it and would want to continue playing and defeat the golden AJ Styles boss at the end of the game.
Lastly, the game sees the return of the 2K Showcase. Again, this hasn’t been my favorite thing in the past, but this year I really enjoyed playing through the story of Daniel Bryan and being able to take control of that feel-good energy that comes with the story of his comeback. The story itself is well-told through cutscenes and features a helluva dream match as a surprise. One of my favorite things is the use of Ring Of Honor footage for an early video package. It’s just another one of those things that shows just how far the wrestling industry has come and it’s so cool to see:
