In 2002, The Undertaker was running strong as Big Evil, the heel WWE Champion. He was wreaking havoc on RAW and found an extremely unlikely challenger in the young upstart Jeff Hardy, who was hardly getting his singles career started. Obviously, we were many years away from still seeing Hardy’s potential, but the signs were there quite early on.
On an episode of RAW, The Undertaker would defend the WWE Championship in a ladder match and it turned out to be among the best RAW matches that year. Jeff Hardy showed an incredible amount of heart, coming close time and again to capturing the titles. While fans obviously wanted the underdog Hardy to win, the story told in the ring was fantastic. Jim Ross made the iconic call “Climb the ladder kid, make yourself famous!”.
Hardy would come close but ultimately fail in doing so, with The Undertaker beating him. However, right after this, The Undertaker attacked him and left, only for Hardy to urge him to keep coming at him. In a moment of respect, The Undertaker realized Hardy’s toughness and raised his hand, instantly turning face in the process.
