There was never going to be any other option. CM Punk’s sudden rise in WWE was by far the best story of 2011 and the June-July period was where it Punk’s popularity was at an all-time high. Of course, it all started with the Pipebomb promo and led to something incredible. It was all so organic and Punk became a de-facto babyface against the company’s champion – John Cena.
Moreover, apart from just the natural chemistry they had together on the mic and in the ring, it was the incredible Chicago crowd that made this match. Had Punk lost, it sounded as though they would riot. Thankfully, Punk won the all-time classic match between the two and ran out of WWE with the title. It would lead to a great storyline and culminate with Punk’s 434-day WWE title reign.
