John Cena is one of the few cases of superstars who won the MITB briefcase that didn’t need the accolade at all. At the time, Cena was already the most pushed superstar in the company and had multiple world championships to his name. Winning the MITB briefcase essentially wasted it that year for two reasons. One, it could have been given to another superstar more deserving and two – Cena didn’t end up winning the world title anyway.
His character cashed in beforehand in an “honorable” way, becoming the first superstar to ever fail a cash-in. It all felt so unnecessary and didn’t give Cena a good look either.
