Mick Foley was the special guest referee for Edge‘s WWE title rematch against John Cena on RAW. Cena won, and Edge felt he was screwed over by Foley. Their rivalry had begun and he placed a challenge for WrestleMania 22, in what would end up being a hardcore match. Of course, the bout was always designed to put Edge over, as The Rated-R Superstar was still the future.
They would have a career-defining match at WrestleMania, where they stole the show in a brutal affair. Edge would end up spearing Foley through a flaming table, allowing him to pick up a win against the legend.
