One year later, the roles were reversed in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom. Okada was the champion and Tanahashi was the challenger. It was a chance for redemption for The Rainmaker and winning the match would prove him as the undisputed ace of NJPW. It was arguably the greatest passing of the torch match ever, as Okada clung on desperately to beat Tanahashi.
He needed to beat Tanahashi in the Tokyo Dome specifically. One of the final shots of the match saw Okada clinging onto Tanahashi’s wrist, proving that he was the man who wanted it more. Like a true warrior, he finally put Tanahashi away, officially cementing himself as the new ace of NJPW.
