After a successful title defense at Sakura Genesis, Okada equaled Tanahashi at 11 title defenses. His next challenge was none other than Tanahashi himself, who he had to defeat to surpass his record. They had a dramatic match at Wrestling Dontaku 2018, where Okada had an extremely close contest with the former Ace. At the end of an instant classic, Okada defeated Tanahashi to cement his record with 12 title defenses.
Little did he know that it would be his very last title defense.
