Isenberg Reacts: WWE Royal Rumble “Banking on Veterans and Not on Your Future”

Royal Rumble Match

With over an hour long match, I will break down the big points of the match and some that are good and some that are bad.

  • Braun Strowman dominated enough to not feel he was wasted. Being eliminated by Baron Corbin makes Corbin look stronger, but he should not have eliminated a guy to get a roaring ovation from the crowd. He is a HEEL.
  • Tye Dillinger entering at number 10 was a great moment and showcases that a chant and solid talent in the ring can get you anywhere. Who doesn’t love to chant ten?
  • I would have rather seen 3 to 4 legends instead of Kalisto, Apollo Crews, Mojo Rawley and others. If they have ZERO chance, what is the point?
  • Brock Lesnar getting eliminated by Goldberg with one spear pisses me off. You go from a dominant and wrestling-changing athlete to someone where we have to suspend belief that someone 15 years older and 35 pounds lighter can beat him at the snap of his fingers. How cool was Goldberg and Undertaker staring at one another?
  • The forgettable guys in the rumble include Dolph Ziggler, The Miz and Dean Ambrose. Ironically enough, they are Smackdown’s three most consistent performers.
  • No Joe. No Balor. Big mistake on not having one of them in the match. Impact and shock value is what WWE should do for this match.
  • Roman Reigns vs. The Undertaker… I could get into it, if booked right. I would prefer Cena vs. Undertaker, but will WWE actually book Roman as a full heel here?
  • Randy Orton winning was alright with me, even though Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens should be the Universal Championship match. Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt would be better fitted if Bray Wyatt won the Royal Rumble match. That would be something he needs and can run with in storyline creation with anyone, especially if WWE wanted to change the call in a few weeks.

Overall, The Royal Rumble delivered great championship matches and some memorable moments in the Royal Rumble match. It shows that they STILL rely on John Cena, The Undertaker, Randy Orton and other primed veterans this time of year. Is that necessarily a good thing?
