New NXT Tag Team Champions
Two out of three falls for the NXT Tag Team Championship might be the match of the year. Incredible drama, high stakes and two tag teams that just get “IT.” Plenty of opportunities for each team to pick up the final fall. The Revival and DIY showcased excellent athleticism and strength, as well as teamwork that plenty of the tag teams on the main roster can learn from.
Why are they so good? Why does this match work? I think you have to look at the talent and how great they are inside and outside of the ring. We get the Johnny Wrestling and the fans connect. Tomasso is such a talented worker, while Dash and Dawson are a prototypical tag team. They are so great at knowing the other and the timing that they use in the ring never misses. When one is down, the other is right there waiting to finish off their opponents. I loved this match for all of the right reasons, for the drama at the end and the multiple near falls. I also loved that The Revival tried to hit DIY’s finisher, but it backfired and the new champions used The Revival’s finisher. It was sweet justice, ironic and absolutely brilliant booking. Congratulations to these two teams and I do think The Revival should get a rematch and then pack their bags and head to the blue brand. They need them.
The Return of Mickie James
One of my favorites from a decade ago made her WWE return. Mickie James returned at NXT Takeover Toronto and faced off against Asuka. Fun, mind games and teasing are words to describe the first few minutes. It followed with James hitting a few kicks and a dropkick on the mat. Applying a headlock and slowing the pace down seemed to be what James wanted to do.
Well, it was not long until Asuka took over and ended up picking up the victory. Mickie James still has it and looked great inside the squared circle against someone she has no history with. While we knew Asuka would win, we wanted to see what WWE would do. I really hope that this is not a one-off for James, as she could really help a Smackdown Live show with being one of the most credible and veteran talent on the roster. When you look at it, they only really have Nikki Bella as their veteran presence. Natalya seems to be winding down and James’ revitalization in NXT shows you that she can still produce. For Asuka, I feel that a strong push for Ember Moon needs to happen by January.
