I’m glad the much-trumped notion of “The Four Horsewomen” was abandoned, at least for now. Banks being in conflict with Charlotte and Lynch = GREAT MATCHES. From the start, my big fear for this whole project is the likelihood that WWE’s incumbent Divas can’t hang with the new girls when it comes to ringwork, and that drags everything down. That could still happen.
I have seen enough of Banks, Charlotte and Lynch to know they’re something special and could, indeed, lead a revolution. They could make women’s wrestling as legit as it can be within the context of a PG-13 cartoon strip.
It’s definitely good PR. It could drive better TV ratings and additional revenue. I don’t know if women will ever main-event a PPV, or even main-event Raw more than rarely. It’s not about fair, or opportunity. It’s about what the fans want and will accept, and elevating women to main-event status in WWE strikes me as quite a leap of faith. Perhaps I’m underestimating the audience.
I’m passionately hoping for the best. I want this “revolution” to be everything it can be. But I know which way I’m betting.
I bet Banks, Charlotte and Lynch will be on “Total Divas” before you know it. At that point, the revolution is dead. Cancelling “Total Divas” would be best for the “new” WWE women’s division. Real athletes shouldn’t be seen in that light.
That’s not going to happen. I fear a lot of things aren’t going to happen.
Lana was red-hot. Now she’s absolutely meaningless. The performers can only do so much. The brand only means so much. Everybody heads to the middle.
