4. WRESTLEMANIA X
Most of the early WrestleMania cards had one outstanding match worth going back for – this one had two.
The battle of the brothers featured Owen Hart getting the upset win over Bret Hart in a 20-minute war. From the onset Madison Square Garden was fired up, but I doubt anyone expected another match to top this excellence of an opener.
And then… the ladder match happened. WWF put over Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon as the “first ever ladder match”. It wasn’t. It wasn’t even the first ladder match WWF put on, although the actual first between Bret and Shawn never made air. It was Bret who brought the gimmick to Vince McMahon’s attention, as Stu Hart had been running them in Stampede Wrestling since the 70’s.
Ever the “best there was”, the Hitman brushed off his loss early in the night and defeated the monstrous Yokozuna in the main event to regain the WWF Championship. The remainder of the card wasn’t as solid as many of the shows on this list, but featuring quite possibly the single best match in the history of WrestleMania (the other contender being Austin/Hart) AND a close second definitely puts it over the edge.
