STEP DOWN: Bad News Barrett
WWE really has a way of making me not care about BNB. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited for his return and I’ve always thought he has potential as a Top 5 act, but not if the company is unwilling to get behind him.
I get that Vince loves to book British guys to look like assholes. And to be fair, it sort of works for Barrett. But you also have to pay attention to what the fans want, and at least try to adapt; otherwise they’ll just stop caring altogether. In Wade’s case, he just shouldn’t be playing the bad guy. He’s got a catchphrase everyone loves to chant along with, and despite his past as the Nexus leader and an all-around jerk, people seem to like him.
The Intercontinental Champion takes a step down this week after losing clean to Dean Ambrose. And – SPOILER WARNING – he’s going to lose clean again on Smackdown this Thursday.
Food for thought – most of the legends that appeared at Raw Reunion wouldn’t have made it big without the Intercontinental Championship. That title used to mean something. Even Hulk Hogan, who was more or less born wearing the WWF Championship – some of his greatest rivals, and the men to make him a true icon in the business, were Intercontinental Champions. I don’t remember the Macho Man or the Ultimate Warrior losing clean in non-title matches all that frequently…
