However, much to his credit, Easy E was ripping it up on the other network. Eric Bischoff was such a mean, arrogant prick in his role, that you absolutely hated every word that came out of his mouth. He carried himself with such a convincing arrogance that even Vince McMahon himself wanted to accept his challenge to appear on the other network just to kick his ass. That’s right – let it be told – when Bischoff challenged Vince to a fight on Nitro, Vince was ready to show up. The only thing that prevented that from happening was the fact that Stephanie was graduating from BU the same day. That is an absolutely true story.
Since that time, no authority figure, or figures, have ever lived up to the bar that both Vince and Eric set. Yes, there have been some convincing performers and performances along the way, but none have ever reached, or exceeded that level. And that is exactly why there needs to be a bullet shot deep into the brain of the “Authority Figure” role. Not only is it old and tired, but it will never be as good as it once was, no matter who you put in the role.
In 2015, it’s time to start thinking about different ways to present professional wrestling. Once and for all, it’s time to evolve a business that has retreated since The Attitude Era. It happened back then, and it can happen again – all you really need is for someone to care enough.
