Degeneration X vs. The Legacy
Hell in a Cell ’09
This is a pretty OK match, that probably would have been less disappointing NOT inside Hell in a Cell. Like a few others on this list, I really just didn’t see the need for the most brutal stipulation in wrestling to conclude a program that wasn’t that hardcore to begin with.
2009 featured the first ever Hell in a Cell PPV, and it wasn’t a great show. WWE went a bit overboard with the cage, using it three times in one night; only one of those matches had a decent enough build to maybe be at a level worthy of the Cell. Because the show featured a DX reunion, it immediately took the main event spot, which it definitely didn’t merit. Not on a card with both Randy Orton vs. John Cena, and CM Punk vs. The Undertaker.
This was essentially a one-sided assault on Shawn Michaels, as Triple H got locked out of the cage and was a non-factor for the whole second act. HBK had a few brief comeback attempts, but couldn’t really get any momentum rolling with the 2-on-1 handicap. The finish saw Triple H come back down with bolt cutters, force his way into the Cell and destroy the Legacy.
Like I said, it was just OK. Rhodes and DiBiase held their own with two legends, as well as you’d expect from sons of two Hall of Famers. There simply wasn’t enough material to work with, to raise it about a sub-par experience.
