STEP DOWN: The Ascension
I’ve been very vocal about my complete apathy in NXT tag team The Ascension, basically since they became tag champions. WWE is notorious for not giving a **** about tag wrestling. They can try and fool fans with the current Uso run, but champions are only as good as the list of names they’ve beaten. And by that standard, the Ascension haven’t beaten anyone, and therefor cannot be called great champions. Don’t blame them – blame WWE for not giving a **** about tag wrestling.
Kalisto and Sin Cara beat several teams to qualify as #1 contenders, and will get their shot at NXT Takeover 2 this coming Thursday. Teams that actually appear on the show from time to time. Not enhancement talent and local jobbers, but actual teams. Technically, Conner and Viktor should be challenging them…
I’m not trying to crap all over the champs. Like I’ve now said three times, it comes down to WWE not giving a **** about tag wrestling. Why did all four of the NXT Championship contenders get actual wins? Why did Charlotte get to beat somebody who makes semi-regular appearances? Because WWE cares about singles wrestling. They care about the women more than tag wrestling (which isn’t a bad thing, but historically, it’s sort of funny). Who did the tag champs beat this week to establish themselves going into the big title fight? It might as well have been nobody, because WWE didn’t even feel the need to give us their names, let alone an entrance.
I don’t care about The Ascension, and it seems I’m the only sane person who doesn’t think they need to be brought immediately to the main roster. Why? Because they haven’t wrestled a match long enough to see if they can go in the ring, they haven’t cut any promos decent enough to merit a spot on the main roster, and – I don’t know if you’ve heard – WWE doesn’t give a **** about tag wrestling.
