#1 Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle is the best wrestler to ever step foot in the squared circle. He’s had babyface runs and heel runs, and locked up with The Undertaker during his tenure with the WWE on a few occasions. Kurt’s character was perfect for a run at The Streak. Former world champion, Olympic gold medalist, and as a heel he wasn’t afraid to cheat his way out of any situation, even though he had the technical chops to beat anybody on the roster.
During the time that Angle was at the top of the food chain in WWE, The Undertaker had debuted his “American Badass” character and was “making people famous” in high profile matches. But that’s not the kind of WrestleMania main event I’m talking about. Angle is world class tier. He’s Shawn Michaels level in the ring. For that kind of match you need the theatrics. I’m talking about the gongs, the druids, the 18-minute entrance, the 27 nearfalls and the overly dramatic Angle Slam counter into a Tombstone Piledriver for the inevitable win.
The match almost happened – or at least I’d like to think it did. In 2006 Undertaker made his return at the Royal Rumble PPV to challenge new World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle. The two ended up having a fantastic match at the next month’s No Way Out PPV, but that was the end of the road. Taker instead fought Mark Henry in a just OK casket match, while Angle dropped the title to Rey Mysterio in a 3-way that also involved Randy Orton.
