#6 – The Undertaker vs. Edge
SummerSlam 2008
Indianapolis, IN
I love the Undertaker and Edge feud, which gets a lot less recognition than it deserves because in 2008 the brands were still split, and Smackdown wasn’t considered the B-Show. The World Heavyweight Championship was a B-Championship, and despite the PPV events being joint broadcasts of both brands, the WWE Championship more often than not was considered the more important title. But there was one SummerSlam where something just happened to be more important than both the WWE and World Heavyweight titles – the return of the Undertaker, and the fifth and final encounter with the “Rated-R Superstar” Edge.
Hell in a Cell matches never feel all that important, now that they have their own PPV. Like most gimmicks, they feel forced and without real reason. Superstars compete in watered-down versisons of brutal stiputlations because their rivalry doesn’t really require the use of cages or ladders or chairs, but the obligatory PPV name demands it. That wasn’t the case here, as the two biggest names of Smackdown – two of the guys who had carried the brand and would continue to do so – stepped inside the Devil’s Playground for a classic match, on the 2nd biggest stage of the year.
