I caught the second half of WWE Night of Champions last night, and the hate on Twitter made it pretty impossible to enjoy what I was watching. Most everyone seemed to be pleased that Bryan had won the WWE Championship, but everything before that was seen in a negative light from social media.
I had the chance to re-watch the show this morning, and while I can see why people were down on the pay-per-view, there was also some really good thing I want to point out.
1) Curtis Axel worked two matches, and both were really well put together. His Intercontinental Championship defense was the best of the two, for my money, but he wrestled a completely different, more physical match with Punk later on that was equally as enjoyable. Axel is slowly changing my mind about him, and I'm hoping that's something that can continue. I think WWE might be setting him up for a babyface turn in the near future, and I don't think that would be the worst thing for him.
2) Ryback in another feud with CM Punk is blah. Ryback is a Paul Heyman Guy, however, has potential. I'll keep you posted on my thoughts with this one…
3) Prime Time Players are pretty damn over. I'd like to see them run a secondary tag team angle on Raw and Smackdown with the Wyatt Family to keep them fresh while out of the title picture. It'd also give them a chance to expand, working with some real characters like Bray Wyatt and his boys.
4) Shield continues to look dominant as a part of Team Corporate. Two big matches = two title defenses. I don't think they can drop the belts and still look as strong however. If they're going to protect Triple H and Randy Orton, they need to come off looking second to none, and having titles for their respective divisions accomplishes that.
There was also some not so great stuff at Night of Champions. The crowd took forever to get into the event. I expected them to be a lot more hot for Rob Van Dam, and a lack of momentum killed what could have been a great match. Punk and Bryan got the job done for Detroit, but that should have started earlier in the night.
Miz and Fandango really killed the atmosphere. I have no idea what's going on with their angle, because I don't spend a ton of time watching the minor league feuds on Raw these days. If it doesn't interest me, I don't have time for it, and Fandango/Miz does not interest me in the least.
