What’s Bothering Me (In Professional Wrestling)

NUMBER 3: What's Wrong w/ The Muppets?

Ever since WWE announced that the Muppets would be appearing on the 10/31 edition of WWE Raw, wrestling fans started voicing their displeasure at any cost.  I don't understand why.  This isn't the first time WWE (or pro wrestling, in general) has used outside gimmicks or commodities to sell there own products.  And it certainly won't be the last.

In most cases, it adds extra entertainment value for only a fraction of the audience, but why does it matter so much to the other portion?  Are a few cheesy segments with Kermit and Miss Piggy going to ruin an entire two-hour edition of Raw for you?  I would certainly hope not – for your sake.

Without sponsors – whether it be Mike's Hard Lemonade or an upcoming cartoon movie – wrestling would cease to exist as we know it.  And if you were Vince McMahon and were offered $750k (I have no idea how much it actually costs) to put a few muppet babies on your national tv show, I'm sure you would jump at it too.  Hell, that just paid four salaries!

Right or wrong, wrestling is still presented as a family show – more now than ever with WWE's PG rating.  Though I'm sure there were other alterior motives for that decision, corporate sponsorship certainly played a part.  Some companies won't even touch pro wrestling when it comes to promoting their products.  WWE can't afford to turn down the ones that will.

I'm not asking you to run out and pay to watch the new Muppet movie when it comes out later this year, but lighten up a little.  It bothers me that you let it bother you so much.  It's not healthy, you know.
