By making fans care about Rey Mysterio’s mask, Chris Jericho is strengthening his claim as the best all-around performer in wrestling.
Why would fans care about a mask?
Good question. But they do, as evidenced by all the little kids that wear them. Titles mean nothing in WWE. To get heat, personal issues need to be created. Jericho and Rey have made the mask a personal issue.
Rey was previously unmasked in WCW. In fact, he competed for a lengthy period sans hood. He looked like my Latino paperboy.
I’m sure it gives Jericho no small fillip of satisfaction that WCW’s unmasking of Rey was done so clumsily (in a throwaway tag match pitting Rey and Konnan vs. the Outsiders) that everyone forgot it happened. Anyway, that unmasking happened 10 years ago, so the kids who are Rey’s biggest fans now don’t even remember it.
In Mexico, the mask is sacred. In America, it’s different. To kids, the mask makes Rey seem like a superhero. When Rey is unmasked, it’s like seeing Spiderman as Peter Parker. There’s implied vulnerability.
Kudos to Jericho. He knows what he’s doing, and who to do it with.
By staying away from HHH, Cena and Randy Orton’s twink porn brigade, Jericho can execute well-planned storylines without having to bow at the altar of anyone’s bloated ego/reputation. He can do it right.
