Nick’s Pay-Per-Review: WWE Bragging Rights 2009

60 Minute Anything Goes Iron Match for the WWE Title: Randy Orton (c) vs John Cena: All the naysayers claimed they didn’t want to see Orton vs Cena yet again, yet two things turned out to be ironic: 1. The poll on WrestleZone, out of over 4,000 votes, has Cena vs Orton as the clear choice of which match fans wanted to see the most last night. 2. The two of them brought the house down with a great Iron Man Match that showcased them both as two of WWE’s top guys. This was a hard-fought, well booked battle that I think will definitely be a match of the year candidate when 2009 is in the books. We reported earlier today that the blood spot at the 20 minute mark into the bout when Orton hit Cena with the mic was not planned and Cena was busted open the hard way, and I thought that reality was an excellent mistake. John Cena reacted amazingly to the sight of his own blood, battling back at Orton even thought the trainers were trying to clean him up. That lead to the medics eventually sealing the wound with glue and Cena was right back into the bout. The announcers did a great job of putting over the blood and then bringing back the idea of Orton focusing on the wound later on in the match. Everyone used the “shoot” spot to their advantage in the match, and it added great intensity. My one complaint with this bout, however, and I pointed it out last week on The Voice of Wrestling, is that the added stipulation of Cena having to leave Raw if he lost the match was unnecessary. It really took the unpredictability out of the match as I never thought for one second that WWE would ever remove it’s top guy from it’s flag ship show. Secondly, creative is not going to book a heel to run the company’s top face off Raw. It would be a huge momentum killer and would run contradictory to the face/heel concept. If WWE had done without the “Cena leaves Raw” idea then I think the match would have been more suspenseful as I would have bought the idea of either guy walking out with the title. 9 Stars.
