A deep and wide talent roster where the top stars are in easy-to-digest issues that lead to money-drawing matches of significance is what wrestling fans of any generation want to see. I would submit that TNA has none of that.
TNA is Lucy and the fans are Charlie Brown. When will everyone finally just quit trying to finally kick the football? Or has everyone moved on already? Sad…
Fans like wrestling interviews too. Not written by writers but those that are a reflection of the personality of the wrestlers themselves. For example, no one should be able to write for Daniel Bryan other than the man himself. Have the producer work with the wrestler, who hopefully can put into words just who he is, to make that message concise and interesting. But other than that, get out of the way.
There has always been “guidance” in wrestling interviews but the strict control of the spoken word has only come about over the past few years. No one could have written for Bruiser Brody or Dusty Rhodes or Jerry Lawler. The best promo guys of all time could spill out hours and hours of promos that they had created while going up and down the highways, knowing they had to “sing for their supper”.
But do today’s wrestlers have the same desire to craft their own message? Are they doing the work to hone that edge, filling notebooks with quotes, thoughts and soundbytes? I’ve taught dozens of promo camps over the past seven years and I have to wonder if the “chosen ones” in developmental are doing the hard work.
“Hey you dang woodchucks! Quit chucking my wood!”
