When the brand split was re-introduced in 2016, it was made clear that Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles would be the centerpieces of SmackDown Live. With John Cena only appearing part-time, his presence helped in a limited way. However, this didn’t stop the fact that Ambrose and Styles had incredible chemistry together.
After Styles captured the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose, The Lunatic Fringe was on a pursuit to regain the title. After being unsuccessful, the culmination of their feud was in a TLC match. The main event delivered in a huge way, with the two having their best match yet. Ultimately, thanks to a heel turn from James Ellsworth, Styles was able to retain.
