NJPW clearly has a lot of trust in Kenny Omega and it showed in 2016 and 2017 more than ever. Kenny Omega defeated Hirooki Goto in the finals of the G1 Climax to become the first gaijin to ever win the prestigious tournament. Omega main evented Wrestle Kingdom in an attempt to capture the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Kazuchika Okada. He was the first gaijin to main event the PPV as well.
Though Omega was unsuccessful, the match was so good that it was hailed as one of the greatest of all time, and Omega’s stock had risen considerably with the match. It made him the hottest and most sought-after wrestler in the world.
