Cody Rhodes defeated “Almighty” Christopher Daniels in the main event of Friday night’s ROH Best in the World pay-per-view to become the new Ring of Honor World Champion.
It has been almost 31 years since a member of the Rhodes family has been a major world champion in the United States. Cody’s legendary father, WWE Hall of Famer “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes won dozens of regional titles as one of the premiere stars of Championship Wrestling from Florida throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, but had his final reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion in 1986.
As for the 31-year-old “American Nightmare” from Marietta, Georgia the young star adds the ROH World Championship to his resume that includes two runs at WWE Intercontinental Champion and six sets of WWE tag team titles, including two with his brother Dustin Runnels.
As the saying goes, there ain’t no rest for the wicked. Cody will step into the ring for the greatest challenge of his career on July 1st when New Japan Pro Wrestling comes to Long Beach for the first time ever, facing off against Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
