A start that was all too familiar ended as the greatest encounter between two of WWE’s top performers.
That was Monday night for Charlotte and Sasha.
The two ladies have met several times on Raw, trading wins and the women’s title since July. And they again played hot potato with the championship belt. However, any lack of originality with this story line was more than made up for by the quality of work.
In the ring, Charlotte and Sasha were never better than on Monday night. The match, smartly positioned as the television program’s main event, successfully redeemed the cluster-f*** that was their match at the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view. In this match, the stipulation of falls counting anywhere infused creativity and added intensity to the proceedings. And the image of Sasha using the railing to assist in forcing Charlotte’s tapping to the submission part of the “Bank Statement” will not soon fade from anybody’s memory.
Having Sasha apply her hold in the lower bowl of this particular arena represented the height of irony, too.
That was Sasha defeating the champion in the North Carolina town that inspired Charlotte Flair’s name, in capital city of Flair Country.
And to the gentleman fortunate enough to buy a mid-level ticket and have Sasha damn near on his lap as she executed the ending — never will there be a better WWE live experience; might want to quit while you’re ahead.
In Sasha’s previous two title championship reigns, she owned for less than 30 days each time.
That can’t happen here … not after this triumphant victory in Charlotte’s hometown … not after Ric Flair showed up to raise the hand of his daughter’s rival. The events from RAW must signal the start of a substantive, lengthy run with Banks as the new face of women’s wrestling.
Charlotte should go away.
Give her some time off. She’s earned it. And her absence would emphasize the importance of this most recent loss to Banks.
WWE can bring Charlotte back for the first women’s Royal Rumble match in January. By then, she’ll be fresh and a breath of fresh air.
