I write a wrestling column every Monday and Friday for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. It can be found online at TribLIVE.com.
The latest column is on the topic of Cesaro and the gamble WWE is taking with how they plan to book him. The following is an excerpt:
So WWE is trying to be “The King of Spin” with “The King of Swing.”
Latest news from the inner workings of the brain trust is the company manufacturing a Daniel Bryan like situation with Cesaro.
Recently dubbed the newest Paul Heyman associate, Cesaro has been on an upward push of momentum with his Olympic strength that features him swinging opponents in the ring and other must-see maneuvers.
Ever since Cesaro and Heyman became aligned almost two weeks ago, there has been an obvious sense of confusion as to which locker room Cesaro belongs to.
Is he a heel or face?
The crowd would tell you he's a face, but the presentation of him with someone like Heyman indicates he's the heel. The recent insider news is suggestion this confusion is exactly what WWE is aiming for.
The company wants to force him on television as a heel with the people rebelling and treating him like a babyface. The end goal is WWE eventually gives in and Cesaro is the next big commodity for the company, similar to Bryan's triumph.
Vince McMahon is good at manipulating a crowd, but he should beware what he wishes for.
Cesaro is one of the most unique and gifted performers WWE's ever had. Trying to manufacture confusion or fanfare with the hopes of a happy ending could turn dangerous with the fickle audience of today's product.
