Opening Segment Review:
Ric Flair opens the show and wants to talk to Sting one last time. Out comes Sting, and Flair says either one will retire, or one will go to the hotel and get drunk. He promised Hulk he would take care of it. Flair tells Sting the only way he will get to Hulk is over his dead body, and Sting says that Flair will die tonight. Sting tells Flair that they should not wait until later and get it on tonight. Security comes out, and Flair begins to woo as he and Sting are separated.
Reaction:
Two guys who know how to work the microphone and crowd start off Impact. I am not excited to see the match as I feel it will not be a classic one on one bout between these two, but given what they are trying to do, Flair continues to never miss a beat on the mic and Sting uses his crazy look and insane personality to build this match tonight. This is the second straight week where they try to build their main event in the first segment. Let’s just hope this match is better than Angle and Anderson from a week ago. This segment gets a B-. They teased the main event, and tried to get the crowd invested in it from the very beginning of the night.
Devon, Pope, Tara, and Miss Tessmacher vs. Mexican America Review:
Hernandez and Devon start the match off. Devon applies a headlock and hits a flying shoulder block. As the referee is distracted, Hernandez hits Devon in the back of the head. Anarquia and Pope get in the ring at the same time. Pope gets on the offensive, as he hits an atomic drop and some punches. Pope gets ready for a DDT but Sarita and Rosita grab his dreadlocks for Hernandez. Hernandez and Anarquia hit consecutive corner splashes. Pope gets hit with a bulldog, regroups, and tags in Devon.
Devon connects with a flying shoulder tackle, and all men are in the ring. Sarita and Rosita get chased to the outside, but begin to flirt with Devon’s sons. They grab the attention in the ring of Pope and Devon. They are able to regroup and hit a double team shoulder block onto Hernandez. Pope and Devon then clear the ring. This allows Brooke and Tara to connect with a double team inverted choke slam type power bomb for the victory.
Reaction:
It was nice to see Mexican America back in the ring on Impact this week. I feel like the match did what it was supposed to, make Devon and Pope look like serious contenders without making Hernandez and Anarquia look completely weak. I am beginning to like the team work of Devon and Pope, but fear they are too similar in their offensive moves to be a legit tag team on the rise. Either way, the match was solid paced, and grabbed enough of my attention without rushing a finish. This match gets a C+, as all that was missing was good women’s wrestling when given the chance.
