Time for Rey Mysterio to hang it up?!

Rey Mysterio may be one of the most entertaing wrestlers to watch in the ring….wait for it…wait for it….BUT….the poor guy just can’t stay healthy anymore.

As reported on Wrestlezone.com, loc.wrestlezone.com/news/article/the-very-latest-on-rey-mysterio-how-long-he-might-be-out-91245

Rey has suffered another injury to his knee. He apparently has two procedures that he can choose from. According to the report, one would keep him out until the spring and the other would put him on the shelf until late summer of 2010.

Is it time for Rey to hang up the mask?

He is only 34, but Rey has been wrestling since he was a teenager and it has took its toll. For a little guy in a business of giants, Rey has took a beating. He has had 5 surgeries on his left knee.

I am no medical expert, but I know with some cases that surgery can make you stronger. I believe Triple H would be an example of that with his quads as he has been stronger than ever and healthy since his last operation. Rey has had 5, and keeps getting hurt. A knee is a tough thing to fight off for any athlete, especially a pro wrestler who has Mysterio’s style.

He has slowed his in-ring pace down over the past few years. Some of that due to the opponents the WWE has to offer and the other because of his health.

Even though he is slower and not as extreme as he once was, Rey can put on some of the best matches on any given night…..WHEN HE IS HEALTHY!

Mysterio comes out and gets the second longest entrance (behind Triple H’s singles entrance) than goes and finds every kid with a mask on. Over the past two years I feel like we see more of Rey making an entrance than able to put on the matches that made him famous. I hope for Rey’s sake that does not continue, as he will share that characteristic with so many older guys who have become nothing more than an entrance of nostalgia, but when the bell rings the reality sets in.

Sadly it feels like he has become the Major League Baseball pitcher that can never get back into the groove because every couple of starts he is sidelined with an injury.

Rey will be gone from television and whenever he is able to return based upon what medical route he goes, when its time for him to come back we will see the big promos hyping his return. He will come back either heavily hyped or make a surprise appearance that sparks a new feud but I’d put money on in vegas that he would be injured again within 6 months.

Obviously injury is apart of the business. To do what these guys do and not get hurt is impossible. However, there comes a time when you have to just be the biggest man you can be and walk away. You know a lot like the big man Hulk Hogan is able to be……NOT!

Rey relies on his legs for the quick movements, high flying moves, and his legs are continuing to get hurt. The WWE is showing no signs of ever having the type of cruiserweight action that use to be so popular in the 90’s, so just hang it up.

Walk away before you begin to tarnish your legacy by being that guy who can’t give it up. I understand wrestling has been his life, his families, his close friends such as several guys who have passed on recently, but I think its time.

Unlike so many that are both alive and dead, Rey Mysterio has his family and is financially set. Because of those factors I think he should go enjoy those happy days and allow his highlight reels to live on.

Always interested to hear what you think. As always, no “smarks” or ass comments please. I must say the last article regarding the smelly crap of Sheamus may have brought in more emails than I have ever had for an article. I did my best to get back to as many as I could. I really appreciate it and love the interaction with all of you. Amazing to see how many of people agreed. Should be interesting to see what the TLC PPV buys are based upon many of the reactions I got.

Happy Thanksgiving!
