CM Punk shares the mindset that keeps him going as he nears the 20th anniversary of his WWE debut.
Reigning Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk will be in action at Night One of WWE SummerSlam on Saturday, August 1. He will defend his title against former champion Cody Rhodes in the main event.
Ahead of his match, CM Punk appeared on ESPN Get Up to promote WWE SummerSlam. He detailed his preparations for the event and noted that his friendship with Cody Rhodes will remain unaffected despite the outcome. He also spoke about the other matches on the card.
CM Punk compares his WWE longevity journey to LeBron James and Tom Brady
During the conversation, the host asked him what he feels he still has to prove at this stage of his wrestling career. CM Punk reflected on approaching the 20th anniversary of his official WWE debut with the ECW brand back in 2006.
Punk noted that while people assume he is nearing retirement, he actually uses that expectation as motivation. He took inspiration from legends like LeBron James and Tom Brady, who defied age in their respective sports, which gives him the drive to prove critics wrong.
“As you say that, August 1, I do believe, Saturday, [is] the first night of SummerSlam, the show that I’m wrestling on, will be my 20th anniversary of debuting in the WWE. What keeps me going is the fact that everyone kinda looks at that like, ‘Oh, you’re finishing up. You’re getting ready to say goodbye.’ And I look to older athletes who have been in that same position,” CM Punk said.
“I’m talking [about] LeBron [James], Tom Brady, people who are extraordinary at what they do when they necessarily shouldn’t be that good. And that kinda feeds the drive and the ego a little bit. I like proving people wrong,” Punk said.
