The Rock Defends Wearing Skirt at Met Gala With Message on Masculinity

Dwayne Johnson made a striking impression at the 2026 Met Gala on May 4 in New York City, but it wasn’t just the outfit that got people talking — it was the meaning behind it.

Walking the red carpet alongside his wife Lauren Hashian, Johnson debuted a custom look that blended tradition with statement. At first glance, it turned heads.

On closer inspection, it carried a message that went deeper than fashion — and, much like a well-timed promo, it landed with intent.

The Rock explains his Met Gala outfit was inspired by Polynesian culture

Johnson wore a custom Thom Browne ensemble featuring a black tailcoat, bow tie, and a pleated skirt. The design included intricate details, with over 350 meters of hand-pleated silk ribbons forming a skeletal pattern across the coat.

Speaking to reporters, Johnson made it clear the choice wasn’t random. “I feel great!” he said, before explaining the cultural influence behind the look. “In our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts. The most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts.”

He added context to the creative process, noting the design team checked in before finalizing the outfit. “They asked, ‘Is Deej going to be cool with this pleated skirt?’” Johnson recalled, making it clear he was fully on board from the start.

The appearance marked his Met Gala debut, fitting into the event’s “Fashion is Art” theme. While the outfit sparked conversation, Johnson’s message stayed consistent with his earlier comments at CinemaCon 2026.

There, he defined “real masculinity” as supporting and empowering women, stating, “All men of all ages, we should empower and support and champion all women.”

In a setting known for bold statements, Johnson didn’t just step onto the red carpet — he made sure his message didn’t miss its mark.
