Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu moved one step closer to collision on the April 27 episode of Monday Night RAW in Laredo, Texas, but the road to WWE Backlash didn’t come without sparks — or a chokehold that changed the tone.
The segment began with Reigns addressing the crowd and reflecting on his influence over the World Heavyweight Championship, making it clear he still sees himself as the standard-bearer.
However, before he could fully control the narrative, Fatu arrived — and quickly turned the conversation into a confrontation.
Roman Reigns vs Jacob Fatu Backlash match confirmed after the RAW Showdown
Reigns initially questioned whether Fatu was ready for the responsibility that comes with the title, framing it as a burden rather than a prize. He agreed to the match but added a condition — if Fatu loses, he must acknowledge him as the “Original Tribal Chief.” It was less a contract signing and more a verbal steel cage.
Fatu, however, didn’t wait for paperwork. He dismissed the need for time, stating he “didn’t need a week… didn’t even need an hour,” stressing his 12-year grind to reach this point. While Reigns spoke of legacy, Fatu spoke of survival — a classic clash of dynasty versus hunger.
The tension snapped when Fatu attacked, locking in the Tongan Death Grip and leaving Reigns down in the ring. In that moment, the message was loud and clear — this isn’t just a challenge, it’s a takeover attempt.
The presence of The Usos in the previous RAW has added another layer. The family dynamic continues to blur the lines between loyalty and rivalry. What started as a challenge now feels like a full-blown Bloodline fracture. That’s the kind of storyline that rarely ends with a handshake.
Reigns eventually accepted, shouting that he’d see Fatu at Backlash, but the damage — both physical and symbolic — was already done.
With WWE Backlash set for May 9, the battle lines are drawn. In a family where acknowledgment is currency, someone’s about to get written off — and not in pencil.
