CM Punk Explains Why Turning Heel Could Backfire For Him In WWE

WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk recently opened up about a possible heel turn, and his answer was interesting. He does not think it would work the way people expect.

CM Punk has done some of his best work as a heel before. During his first run in WWE, he played a ruthless character with his infamous feuds with Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio. Later, during his long WWE title reign of 434 days, he showed another side.

He leaned into frustration and talked about not getting respect. He compared himself to stars like John Cena and The Rock. Since returning to WWE, Punk has become one of the biggest babyfaces on the roster. Fans cheer him every week; however, some fans now want that version back. But Punk does not think it would work the same way today.

CM Punk points to John Cena as an example of a heel turn backfiring

Speaking on GOAT Talk by Complex, CM Punk was asked to identify the GOAT heel in wrestling history. Punk pointed at himself; however, he pointed out, saying, “What’s so strange about that is everybody loves me now. You’ll be such a great villain that people wind up loving you. Fans at C2E2 recently, fans come through the line, ‘Oh, you got to turn heel. We need you to be a heel, blah, blah, blah.’

“And the thing is, if I turned heel, it would make me an even more enormous baby face. They would still cheer. We watched it in real time backfire on John Cena. John wanted to try something new. He was retiring. He thought it could be fun. And I thought it was fun but people, you know, people just wanted the greatest hits.”

Right now, Punk is one of the most popular stars on the roster. Turning him heel could actually make fans cheer him more. At the moment, he is focused on a huge match. He will defend his title against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
