CM Punk always wanted to main event WrestleMania. He finally got that chance last year, but wonders if his return to WWE even would have happened if he’d gotten the honor before.
Punk spoke about the hypothetical situation with Sam Roberts and Megan Morant on WWE Now ahead of WrestleMania 42. Unless something changes, Punk will main event this year’s show against Roman Reigns on night two. Punk was asked if this all would have satisfied a younger version of himself, especially if he’d main evented one of the shows during his first WWE run.
“You know, satisfied? I don’t know if [that’s] the word. But it might be ‘dangerous’ because yeah, if you think about this, if I main evented WrestleMania before I left [in 2013], I don’t think I would have come back, because I would have done it,” CM Punk explained. “What am I coming back for? Right? It’s a little weird, like ‘everything happens for a reason.’ It’s just one of those things.”
CM Punk highlights what WrestleMania 41 really meant to him
Punk said he knows there are always cameras on WWE Superstars. However, he was unaware that he was being recorded after the WrestleMania 41 night one main event. That moment already meant a lot to him, explaining how that alone would have been a satisfying end to his wrestling career, if that’s what happened.
“That moment was just me, in the ring, after the fact. I didn’t win. And it’s far beyond being about that. I was just standing in the ring by myself. I was just looking at all four sides of the crowd,” he continued. “I’m just looking around at all four sides, soaking it in. [I’m thinking] ‘Well, if this is the last time I’m ever going to be in a ring, I did it.’”
