Randy Orton Attacks WWE Star Backstage on SmackDown After Recent Heel Turn

Randy Orton’s transformation continued to unfold on the March 20 episode of WWE SmackDown. His in-ring explanation took a sharp turn once he left the spotlight — leading to a tense backstage confrontation that didn’t stay verbal for long.

Earlier in the night, Randy Orton addressed the WWE Universe while seated in the ring. He reflected on his career and the connection he’s built with fans.

However, beneath that calm delivery was a clear shift in mindset. His tone hinted that the Viper wasn’t done striking just yet.

Randy Orton explained that while fan support has defined much of his career, he no longer wants that to be his lasting legacy.

Instead, he’s focused on championships, specifically chasing a 15th world title. He pointed to Cody Rhodes as both a friend and a catalyst. He stated that Rhodes encouraged him to embrace his most dangerous side. Orton believes that this version is necessary to win at WrestleMania 42.

He admitted that listening to the voices in his head comes with losing control at times. However, he insisted that’s the price of unlocking his killer instinct. In classic Orton fashion, it was less a confession and more a warning — the kind that usually lands “out of nowhere.”

That warning carried over backstage. As Orton made his way through the locker room, Matt Cardona confronted him. He questioned Orton’s actions toward Rhodes and the betrayal that shocked SmackDown the previous week.

The exchange escalated quickly. Orton snapped and dropped Cardona with a forearm before telling him to stay out of his business.

The attack further cements Orton’s heel turn, which began on March 13 during the WrestleMania 42 contract signing segment. In that segment he assaulted Rhodes and ended his five-year run as a baby face (one of the longest in his entire career).

With tensions rising and Orton embracing his darker instincts, the road to WrestleMania 42 continues to take a more dangerous path — one where loyalty takes a backseat, and the RKO remains just a moment away.
