CM Punk Not a Fan of WWE Filming in Gorilla Position

CM Punk has mixed feelings about WWE’s new Netflix series, Unreal, taking particular issue with how often cameras enter Gorilla Position.

His comments came as the show continues to pull back the curtain on WWE’s backstage environment.

Season 2 of WWE Unreal premiered on Netflix on Jan. 20, offering expanded behind-the-scenes access to talent and production.

While the series has drawn praise for its candid approach, Punk made it clear there are limits to how much should be shown.

CM Punk Explains Why Gorilla Position Should Stay Private

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, CM Punk addressed what he dislikes about the series. “What I don’t like is peeling back the curtain a little bit too much. To me, Gorilla is sacred. They shoot so much stuff in Gorilla that I don’t think a lot of the time is anybody’s business,” Punk said.

He stressed that Gorilla Position holds a special place in WWE. Thus, serving as the final checkpoint before performers step through the curtain.

At the same time, Punk was careful to acknowledge what the show does well. He praised Unreal for presenting WWE stars as real people rather than just on-screen characters. “But humanizing people like Charlotte Flair or Rhea Ripley and showing the human behind the character that they play on TV, I think that stuff is beautiful,” he added.

CM Punk’s comments highlight the balance WWE is trying to strike with the series — offering transparency without diminishing long-held traditions.

His perspective reflects a veteran’s respect for the structure behind WWE’s presentation. However, the company embraces a more open storytelling style.

The remarks come as Punk prepares for a major spotlight of his own. Following the Royal Rumble, Roman Reigns selected Punk as the champion of his choosing for WrestleMania 42 in April. As anticipation builds for that match, the WWE World Heavyweight champion’s stance on Unreal underscores an ongoing conversation about how much of WWE’s inner workings should be shared with fans.
