Former WWE star Gable Steveson has opened up about why his time with the company came to an end.
In 2021, Gable Steveson created a huge buzz after winning Olympic gold in wrestling. Following that success, WWE signed him, making Steveson the first Olympic gold medalist to join the company since Kurt Angle.
He remained with WWE from September 2021 until May 2024. Despite the excitement around his signing, Steveson competed in only one televised match on WWE NXT, where he faced Baron Corbin, who now goes by Bishop Dyer. He also worked several dark matches on WWE SmackDown before his release.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Steveson explained that his desire to compete in legitimate sports made it difficult for him to fully commit to professional wrestling. “I had a great experience. I have nothing wrong with anybody there,” Steveson said.
Gable Steveson reveals why he left WWE
“TKO was great, ‘Triple H’ Paul Levesque was great, Stephanie, Vince… everybody was great. I just had a competitive drive that I needed to get out.” He admitted that attempting to split his focus hurt his ability to give WWE everything it required.
“When you have that gap is there, you can’t do both. I was trying to bridge both, and I wasn’t giving my 100% to the business. If I’m not going to give 100% to the business, then you might as well X me out because it’s already over with. That’s practically how it happened.”
Despite being released, Steveson stressed that he holds no resentment toward WWE. In fact, he made it clear that he would be open to returning in the future. “I would love to go back in the future. I would love to do a sport and go out there and dominate. I would love to go if it meant well, and I would do it again most definitely because I have no hard feelings to them.” [H/T: wrestlingnews.co]
