Former WWE Star Set for First NXT Match in Over 5 Years

Former WWE star Matt Cardona is set to have his first match in the company after 5 years.

Since WWE released him in April 2020, Matt Cardona has rebuilt his career on the independent scene. He has also wrestled for AEW, ROH and TNA, getting a huge amount of buzz outside WWE.

Cardona has been helping TNA in the recent NXT vs. TNA showdown. He made his presence felt on WWE NXT. Last week, he interfered in the match between Myles Borne and Josh Briggs, costing Briggs a spot on team NXT.

After his interference, Cardona met with NXT General Manager Ava this week. Backstage, Cardona was seen apologizing to Ava for getting involved in the match between Myles Borne and Josh Briggs, saying he just had to be out there.

However, Ava sarcastically mocked Cardona’s apology, praising him as the king of self-promotion. Cardona said he just wanted to join Team TNA. At that moment, Josh Briggs walked in while Cardona tried to hide behind the door.

Josh Briggs demanded a match against Cardona next week to get revenge for his interference last week. Ava said she would coordinate with Santino to set it up. As Briggs left, Cardona comes out and says this was perfect and that he would see Briggs next week, confirming his first match in WWE after 5 years.

This will be Cardona’s first match in WWE since he (as Zack Ryder) lost to Bobby Lashley on the March 9, 2020 episode of RAW. This is also Cardona’s first match in NXT since June 2016, when he and Mojo Rawley (as the Hype Bros) fought to a no-contest decision against Blake & Murphy.
