Tony Khan recently compared Sting to Hollywood icon Tom Cruise for a very interesting reason.
All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan recently appeared on The Rich Eisen Show. During the interview, Khan spoke about his favorite wrestlers growing up, naming Ric Flair, Bret Hart, and especially Sting.
He said that one of the most important moments of his wrestling career was being part of The Icon’s retirement run in AEW. His final match happened at Revolution in the Greensboro Coliseum back in 2024, the same arena where Sting’s wrestling career began.
The moment became even more special when Sting’s sons joined him in the ring, wearing face paint that represented different phases of his career. According to Khan, Sting ended his career at the top because he earned it through hard work, not because he asked for special treatment.
“He didn’t ask for that. He didn’t demand it,” Tony Khan said. “I don’t think he wanted it, but I felt like Sting deserved it. Sting and Darby Allin vs The Young Bucks for the World Tag Team Championship at AEW Revolution, I think, is the greatest retirement match ever. And, I think Sting really did the work on the retirement run, because to me, Sting is like the Tom Cruise of professional wrestling.
Tony Khan compares Sting’s final run to Tom Cruise’s action career
“You know how Tom Cruise, in recent years, has become this insane stuntman, the greatest stunt actor of all time? That was Sting in his final years. Everybody who’s ever watched a movie knows Tom Cruise. Everybody who’s ever watched a wrestling match knows Sting. And both, even into their 60s, kind of still look the same. They both went really hard and became crazy stuntmen. I think the best work of their career into their 60s.”
