Johnny Gargano says he could not have written #DIY’s title win any better.
On the July 5 episode of WWE SmackDown, #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) beat Grayson Waller and Austin Theory to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. This marked their first title win on the main roster.
In a new vlog, Johnny Gargano discussed his title win.
“Still pretty wild. I don’t know that it’s hit me yet,” Johnny Gargano said. “I don’t know that it’ll ever really hit me because I just don’t work that way. But it’s crazy to think about the fact that, two years ago, when I started this vlog, I was just totally okay being a dad. I didn’t have a contract, I didn’t want a contract, I wanted a complete break from professional wrestling. A pretty big part of me didn’t even know if I was gonna return to WWE. That’s real.
“I remember the time there was a part of me, deep down inside, that still felt unfulfilled, still felt I hadn’t accomplished everything I wanted to, and I didn’t. Growing up, that chubby, shy, socially awkward eight-year-old kid who just loved professional wrestling, who had one of the foam tag team titles, now as an adult has the actual thing. I just want to say, for the record, this title, I’m biased, but probably the most beautiful title probably in professional wrestling.”
Johnny Gargano: Everything Happens When It’s Meant To
Johnny Gargano continued by noting that some might say that the title win should have happened sooner. However, he emphasized that he believed everything happened when it was supposed to.
“Someone’s going to say, ‘Man, it should have happened so much sooner. It should have happened this time, it should have happened that time.’ I believe in my heart that everything happens exactly when it’s supposed to,” Johnny Gargano said. “If this would have happened any sooner, I wouldn’t have been able to share it with Quill, and if this would have happened any sooner, it wouldn’t have worked out to where we won these titles in the city we won the NXT Tag Titles, the same building.”
Johnny Gargano On WWE SummerSlam
Johnny Gargano then looked forward to WWE SummerSlam and noted that the show and its location of Cleveland, Ohio, were important to him.
“Now, I get to carry this championship home, where it all started for me,” Johnny Gargano said. “Cleveland, Ohio, the biggest weekend in Cleveland wrestling history, I think. I’m very on-record with how important that building is to me, how important wrestling in Cleveland Browns stadium is to me, but I’m also very on-record on how Cleveland, Ohio, is to me. It made me who I am today, and I am extremely proud of my hometown. The fact that I get to carry this title and have it in front of my family and friends, that’s so freaking cool.”
Johnny Gargano: If You Want Something, You Can Make It Happen
Johnny Gargano went on to note that SummerSlam 1996 was the show that made him want to be a wrestler, and now he was set to enter SummerSlam 2024 as a champion. He highlighted how he and Ciampa had dreamt of this, and they made it happen.
“SummerSlam 1996 was the very first show I ever went to,” Johnny Gargano said. “It made me want to be a professional wrestler. 28 years later, I’m the WWE Tag Team Champion heading into SummerSlam, couldn’t write it any better. Even more so, me and Tommaso’s story will never be told again. Two kids who were told no, two kids who were told there’s no spot for you in NXT, two indie guys who showed up in NXT without a contract, I don’t think that will ever happen again.
“The fact that we talked about this sitting in a two-bedroom apartment in Orlando on the minimum NXT salary back in 2016, talked about this moment and we made it happen, I said earlier how I believe everything happens exactly when it’s supposed to happen. This is living proof. If you want something, you can make it happen.”
Gargano also thanked his fans for their support.
