WWE RAW Hits And Misses (5/20/24)

It’s time for WWE RAW recap.

This week’s episode emanated from North Carolina’s Greensboro Coliseum. Two superstars qualified for the King and Queen of the Ring finals.

Here’s what went down on the final episode of RAW before King and Queen of the Ring.

Hit – Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable kicked off WWE RAW

Sami Zayn kicked off the show with an in-ring promo. Zayn hyped up his scheduled title defense this Saturday. Chad Gable interrupted his former friend. Master Gable berated his fellow Alpha Academy teammates before taking on Zayn in their non-title match.

Zayn and Gable never disappoint inside the ring. We saw Maxxine and Tozawa’s reluctance to hit Zayn during the match. Only Otis did what Gable told him to do, but his actions put him in a state of guilt.

A solid match to kick off WWE RAW and a controversial win for Gable ahead of his big triple threat at King and Queen of the Ring. Also, we might be getting a Gable-Creed Brothers alliance sooner than later.

Miss – Karrion Kross and The New Day

A WWE medic gave Xavier Woods the clearance to compete. Karrion Kross and Scarlett interrupted the celebration. The former two-time NXT Champion played mind games with Woods just a week after he confronted Kofi Kingston.

Kross has been a miss for me lately. Many had thought WWE had plans for him to feud with Roman Reigns with all the teases that happened on SmackDown nearly two years ago. Nothing came to fruition.

I want Kross to return to his NXT gimmick, where he was just a ruthless heel who destroyed anything and anyone in his path. This psychological warfare didn’t pop a reaction from the SmackDown fans.

Let’s see how the WWE RAW crowd reacts to Kross.

Hit – Bron Breakker snaps

Bron Breakker wasn’t put in the King of the Ring tournament. He made his feelings known in a brutal way last night on WWE RAW. Breakker destroyed his opponent Kale Dixon with multiple spears. He then proceeded to bash his brains in with a steel chair. Breakker told Adam Pearce this was on him for not putting him in the KOTR tournament.

This was perhaps the best segment featuring Bron Breakker on RAW in years. Apparently, Michael Cole forgot Breakker made his red brand debut two years ago. The young Steiner looked like a monster filled with rage. Breakker took out Ricochet during a later segment that also involved Ilja Dragunov.

Triple H is cooking something interesting!

Miss – World Tag Team Title match on WWE RAW

Finn Balor and JD McDonagh faced Awesome Truth for the World Tag Team Championship on WWE RAW this week. The in-ring action was decent. Carlito tried to interfere on Judgment Day’s behalf only to be taken out by Andre the Giant… I mean… Braun Strowman.

Strowman returned as a babyface weeks ago on WWE RAW. He found himself on a collision course with The Judgment Day. I’m more interested in a title match between Strowman and Damian Priest than his feud with The Judgment Day.

Hit – Lyra Valkyria vs. IYO SKY on WWE RAW

Lyra Valkyria took on IYO SKY in the Queen of the Ring semifinals on WWE RAW this week. This was a great match between two former NXT standouts. Lyra kept up with IYO’s insane pace through her own momentum.

Lyra picked up the win with a roll-up after a great back-and-forth match. There’s no denying WWE is high on the former NXT Women’s Champion. Lyra faces the winner of Nia Jax and Bianca Belair in the QOTR finals this Saturday.

Miss – Becky Lynch and Liv Morgan segment

This feud isn’t doing it for me. Liv Morgan doesn’t have the mic skills to hold her own against Becky Lynch. The Man is one of the best talkers on the WWE roster, but it seems they’ve told her against going all out.

Last night’s exchange between the two women didn’t involve any physicality. Liv did hit Lyra to fuel the animosity between them. I’m thinking Becky goes over this Saturday to kickoff a feud with Lyra somewhere down the line.

Hit – Gunther advances to the King of the Ring finals

Gunther took on Jey Uso in the main event of WWE RAW this week. This was a great match to close off RAW. Jey brought the fight to Gunther, but the Ring General kept his flurry of offense for the final moments of the match.

Jey ultimately fell to a rear naked chokehold. Gunther will face the winner of Randy Orton versus Tama Tonga in the KOTR finals. I’m hoping we get the Viper versus the Ring General in Saudi Arabia this Saturday.
