Triple H has given insight into wrestlers love of sneakers in the WWE.
The Game recently appeared on Sneaker Shopping with Complex, and spoke about the backstage sneaker culture at the WWE.
Triple H was asked what he thinks about wrestlers coming in various sneaker brands. He shared that talent asks him to approve their footwear, noting how it’s become a game of bragging rights.
“I love it. If you’re the youth of the world watching this show, how do you connect with our Superstars? That’s just another connection point that makes them cool and puts them on another plane of being a superstar. It’s funny that we have talent now that come up to me at TV and ask like ‘Hey, I’ve got this run in later. You cool if I go in my street clothes? Because I’ve got these new Jordan’s’, or whatever. I just got these and I want to run in.”
When asked if he signed off on wrestler’s wearing the sneakers, Triple H replied:
“Absolutely! I’m old school. I’m traditional. I like wrestling boots, right? But, they’ve transitioned now. A lot of guys like wearing sneakers in the ring. They like the comfort of it, but as you point, they also like to flex. To be able to go out there and have that athletic ability, and have something that is that stylish, it’s a big thing in the locker room too. I hear them talking, ‘Did you see Roman‘s shoes?’, you know what I mean? Or someone will walk up to Gorilla right before they walk through the curtain, and I’ll see them walk over like ‘Oh man’, and go straight to the shoes. It’s not just to flex on TV. It’s a flex in the locker room.”
Triple H: We Call Audibles Every Single Week
Triple H spoke with ESPN about having to pivot creative on the road to WrestleMania 40.
“Now it’s a different time, and the way I do things is slightly different,” Triple H said. “My career, I learned from being here, but there were things along the way that I always thought I would do differently. In this time now, I get to make those calls and with a large team of people. Whether people will want to believe it or not, I think we were sort of looking at this as here’s where we’re going to go to get this started and it has the opportunity of going this way or that way.
“We always have to call audibles every single week. Everything you do is dependent on reactions. That’s what we do as an industry. … The beautiful thing with this group and with Cody and Roman and Rock especially, everybody’s got their ear to the ground. … And then we all just get together and figure the s— out.”
