Will Ospreay has signed with AEW, but a new report provides an update on the companies who were interested in him.
In recent months, Will Ospreay’s future was a hot topic. His NJPW contract was set to expire in February 2024, so he was set to enter free agency. WWE was reportedly interested in him, and Ospreay himself said IMPACT Wrestling was in the running. Ultimately, Ospreay signed with AEW.
Mike Johnson of PWInsider reports that IMPACT Wrestling was in the running for Ospreay ahead of AEW Full Gear. Per Johnson, sources noted that IMPACT made a “fantastic, massive offer” to the NJPW star. One source saying it was a “seven-figure level” offer.
The source stated that this was likely the largest offer to a single star IMPACT has made since Anthem took over. Additionally, the source indicated that several IMPACT talents assumed Ospreay was coming in full-time when he worked Bound For Glory weekend. He seemed to be having a great time, and he cut a promo about wanting to wrestle in a TNA ring.
Update On WWE’s Interest In Will Ospreay
WWE’s interest in Will Ospreay was well-known before he signed with AEW. Many fans had assumed he would wind up there. In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported an update. He wrote that those in WWE admitted that AEW went “higher” with their money offer.
Per Meltzer, the belief was that, though Ospreay said he would be willing to move to the United States, he did not wish to do so. AEW allowing him to remain in the United Kingdom was a key factor in his decision.
Ospreay has said that he wanted to hear everyone out before he made his decision. Check out his comments here.
