Gunther compares The Rock to Hulk Hogan.
In recent weeks, Intercontinental Champion Gunther has provided his honest thoughts on several former holders of the title, including The Miz and The Ultimate Warrior. “The Ring General” also shared his assessment of another notable Intercontinental Champion — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. While The Rock has widely taken a step back from in-ring competition, Gunther believes “The People’s Champion” is like a new version of WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan. During an interview with Steve Fall of WrestlingNewsCo, Gunther explained why.
“[The Rock] is the new Hulk Hogan, I think, in terms of if you ask random people on the street in some random country, they will say The Rock and connect it with wrestling. And [he’s the] most famous, but I categorize him as a showman as well,” Gunther said, alluding to his previous comments about The Ultimate Warrior.
During his time away from the wrestling ring, The Rock has focused on expanding his resume in the acting scene and other business ventures. In September, though, The Rock made a surprise return to WWE SmackDown, where he confronted former United States Champion Austin Theory. After the two engaged in a verbal spat, The Rock took down Theory with The People’s Elbow, boosting SmackDown’s viewership by nearly 15%.
