Many people might agree with the claim that The Rock is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He recently made a shocking return to WWE and that has gotten the world buzzing about what his future looks like in the wrestling business.
While people are wondering what his future looks like, The Great One was reminiscing on the past and some of the greatest matches in his career.
During a recent episode of the Pat McAfee Show, The People’s Champion was a guest. He was asked about his greatest WrestleMania match ever. The Rock initially said that his first WrestleMania main event with Steve Austin was memorable. He can never forget the experience he had in his match against John Cena at WrestleMania 29.
What Just Happened?
One of the reasons The Rock can never forget the WWE Championship match against John Cena is because of the unexpected injury he suffered mid-way through the match.
“So about ten minutes into this match, I take a Rock Bottom, which is my finisher which he gives me about ten minutes into the match. And I go up extra high, I start to turn and I over-rotate. He drives me down into the mat. And I feel this (makes a thumping sound) and I don’t know what it is. And I am laying there as 85,000 people in New York and I’m like ‘damn, what just happened?’ I thought a bone came through my skin You could see in the match, I start to put my hand down my trunks a little bit and I just check it out. ‘
“All right what’s gonna happen’ and so there was no bone and I was like, ‘Man! something happened, though I don’t know what it is.’ I get up, now I start to get numb from the waist down. And I can’t feel anything and the referee says, ‘You okay?’ and I said, ‘Yeah I think I’m okay’… So I asked to the ref, I said, ‘How much more do we we have left in the match?’ He goes, ‘uh… about 25 to 30 minutes.’”
How did The Rock overcome the injury?
The Great One also mentioned that despite his injury, he decided to go ahead and finish the match because that’s what he was committed to do.
“All right, so you know how you’re in that moment sometimes in life, you can call it off or you could go for it and finish what you committed. And so I continued in the match, couldn’t feel anything and I didn’t have a lot of movement in my legs so I had to kind of like use momentum to move my leg.
“At the end of the match, I’m feeding up to John Cena it’s like I’m turning, feeding into his big finish. Now, this is it. In wrestling terminology, it’s called we’re going home. This is the final thing before the big one two three. I feed up and as I’m… as I’m turning into them, I’m literally praying to God, the Universe, Buddha, whoever… I wasn’t praying, ‘don’t hurt me more’, it was, ‘give me strength to endure this s*** show that’s getting ready to happen…” The Rock said.
The People’s Champion also revealed that he later found out that he had a torn quadricep and had to also do an emergency hernia operation.
