Adam Cole loves his video games.
After nine months on the shelf, Adam Cole finally made his in-ring on the March 29 episode of AEW Dynamite. While Cole emerged victorious in the bout, the road to recovery, and his eventual return, was far from easy. Last year, Cole sustained two concussions, but it was the second one that sidelined him for an extended period of time.
Speaking on the Swerve City Podcast, Cole discussed what he did during his time away from the ring. While there were some bad days, of course, Cole says that video games, and his girlfriend, Britt Baker, helped keep him sane. In an effort to prevent headaches or dizziness, Cole had to be cautious about his exposure to television and video games, but eventually, those symptoms began to slowly ease down. After a consult with his physical therapist, Cole was encouraged to return to his (virtual) homebase of Twitch.
“A few months after I had gone through what I had gone through with the recovery process, and I was still seeing a like a brain physical therapist…She actually told me, she goes, ‘What do you like to do?’ And I explained how I enjoy playing video games in my off time. And she goes, ‘Well, if you can play games and you don’t get symptoms, you don’t feel dizzy, you don’t get headaches, do it.’ It’s incredibly important for your neurotransmitters to fire and your reaction time and things like that,” Cole explained.
“So, man, having a Twitch stream and being able to play video games and talking to people was huge for me. I genuinely mean this. Again, I talk about Britt being so helpful, I don’t know how I would have gotten through it without that. Being able to again communicate with the outside world and play these games that I really enjoyed and all those people to be there for me the entire step of the way, man, that was massive. It was huge for me and that kept me sane throughout the whole process for sure.”
In addition to video games, Cole noted his real-life partner, Britt Baker, as another positive light in his journey to recovery. “I can’t tell you how many times that that Britt would wake up at 3:30 in the morning and I would be up pacing back and forth with my heart pounding out of my chest and her getting up and consoling me and being there for me, knowing that she had to be up at 7 a.m. to go to the dental office and not blinking an eye. So, I couldn’t have done it without her. When I say that, I really do mean that,” Cole said.
