Lita is embracing her unique position in WWE.
The WWE Hall of Famer returned to the company earlier, aligning herself with “The Man” Becky Lynch. In the weeks following, Lynch and Lita claimed the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. Eventually, they joined forces with Trish Stratus to take on Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai, & IYO SKY) in a six-woman tag team match at WrestleMania 39. As a 24-year veteran of the sport, Lita now founds herself in an interesting scenario.
In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Lita opened up about the player-coach aspect of her current run. While she continues wrestling, Lita is also helping foster the current generation of WWE Superstars. “It’s poetry, right? To have kind of come up and tried to push the envelope of what a woman’s role in this industry looks like and then, to see the fruits of that labor and the blood, sweat and tears,” she said. “It’s like playtime. I’m like, ‘oh, we did the work and then you guys took it to the next level.’ Then to be invited back in to come play with these phenomenal athletes with just as much passion, pushing things forward to heights that I did not know were possible, where my favorite thing is that we’re running out of boxes to check.”
“And that’s the goal, right? Is just we got to start creating boxes to check off. I really love the dynamic of the generations and being able to come into to mix. Normally we’re sitting on the sidelines. So, to be able to get in there and mix it up with these amazingly talented women is really, really a true joy. It was like a bonus present that I didn’t know I was going to get when I was pushing so hard and being told no and coming back [and asking], ‘How about today? Can I get thrown through a table today? Can we have a cage match today?’ over and over again and finally making some progress.”‘
“IYO and Dakota and Bayley are so talented. I feel like Bayley gets the shine because she’s our homegrown talent, come up through NXT, but man, IYO and Dakota are so talented. To be in the ring with them, it really makes you want to up your game. And I want to do those women proud that have taken the heights so high. I want to be able to be on their level.”
