Matt Hardy Recalls WWE Creative Pitch For The Hardyz To Be ‘Pledges’ For D-Generation X

Matt Hardy has revealed there was a creative pitch early in his WWE career that would have seen The Hardy Boyz pledge to be part of D-Generation X.

On the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, the All Elite Wrestling star recalled an old WWE creative pitch where he and his brother Jeff would be “pledges” for D-Generation X.

“The first thing that comes to mind when we first got there, and we were trying to get our feet underneath us and understand what was going on. We obviously, for the first year, really just went with the flow, and whatever they asked us to do, we would do,” Matt Hardy said. “But something they pitched is they had an idea, and it was creative. This came down from Vince Russo, where he wanted myself and Jeff to be pledges for D-X. And we were like into that.

“You’ll see moments. If you look back in 1998 when we’re in tights, there’s several times we probably do it for like four or five weeks straight. Where we come to the ring, we go up in the corners, and Jeff and I are doing this, and we do the D-X, and we’re going to pledge for D-X, and then eventually kind of like ended up being like their lackeys to a degree and pledge with them and then they were going to kind of see where it went.

“And then maybe we could legitimately like be a part of the D-X when it’s all said and done that that was an idea that Vince Russo had that he wanted to try. And D-X eventually, we did it for like four or five weeks, and they said, ‘Okay, enough of that. We’re not going to do this. These guys aren’t quite ready; let them do whatever.’ And then it just like stopped immediately and was never revisited.”

When Alba brought up the fact that he thought Matt would speak about his proposed stable of The Hardyz, Edge, and Christin, Hardy said that was the first storyline he ever wrote up and pitched to creative.

“I actually thought that I was telling the other story. Because after the ladder match, I really thought there was a great opportunity for us to be like a foursome, to be a unit like a faction, and get over as babyfaces because we had that match which was like a breakthrough thing,” Matt Hardy said. “We were getting standing ovations between every spot in the ladder match, and we came out 24 hours later in Columbus.

“I was just at a building just a few weeks ago for AEW; we got another standing ovation 24 hours later; it was so cool. And yes, we did pitch the idea of being a faction, and I jotted down an idea. It was one of the first times I really did it and gave it a creative that we’re like version one. We’re the new version of things going forward, and maybe even we worked some programs with D-X to elevate us.

“But they didn’t buy into that at all. I think that would have been cool. I think they’d been good. It would have elevated us to a degree, and then we could go in different directions, but they just decided they wanted to keep it separate. And ultimately, they started thinking a few weeks down the road they wanted to turn Edge and Christian heel.”
