In the record books, John Cena remains a 16-time WWE Champion.
In 2017, John Cena captured his sixteenth World Championship in WWE after defeating AJ Styles. There, he tied with Ric Flair for the record of the most WWE Championship reigns. Cena recently celebrated his 20-year anniversary in the company in June, leading to hope that the superstar would return to in-ring action and set a new record. In speaking at Comic-Con in Wales, Cena addressed the chances of him capturing his 17th World Championship. Although he didn’t appear confident in it, Cena definitely isn’t ruling out the possibility.
“Well, that’s a very difficult question,” Cena mentioned. “Like I said, I know I’m not done in the ring. I am realistic with where I’m at in my life. I’m 45, and I can tell you from being a 16-time champion, it is very tough to win. The top of that mountain is a young man’s game. So I’m not done in the ring. but I’m not certain that that’s in the cards. We’ll see. Stories yet to be told because if I’m in the ring, I got a chance. I am just saying I’ve been there, so kudos to the young guys doing it.”
Cena became rumored to challenge Theory for the United States Championship this summer, but Peacemaker filming schedules conflicted.
Alongside Cena, “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair maintains his spot at the top of the record books. However, Flair previously revealed who he thinks might actually be the one to break that record: Randy Orton.
As revealed on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Flair believes “Randy Orton has got a better shot at it.” Orton currently sits with 14 World Championships, with many years left on his WWE contract. Can he capture three more to break the record?
Accordingly, Ric Flair doesn’t believe “they will ever give it to a part-time performer” like a John Cena, for example.
Never say never in professional wrestling, though.
